Mademoiselle Maupin was born Julie d'Aubigny in 1670 and died in 1707 in Paris, France and her father was the secretary of the Comte d'Armagnac. This play is inspired by one of her numerous duels in which she depatched three courtiers outside a fashionable ball. Even though duelling was illelegal at the time, King Louis XIV granted the infamous swordswoman a royal pardon and she left Paris to fight another day. On the eve of a new millennium, three high school girls reveal a unique ritual for letting off steam as the pressures of the impending homecoming dance prove too much. The notion that girls and young women are prevented from developing their physical skills because of ingrained social stereotyping is explored in depth in Colette Dowling's book - The Frailty Myth.
The Festival also included the short plays Mrs. Garrud's Dojo and A Silent Exchange by PETER HILTON
