'TWAS TWO TO A GRAVE
By Peter Hilton
In 1724 a book titled "A General History of the Robberies and
Murders of the most notorious Pyrates" was published under
the authorship of Captain Charles Johnson. But scholars argue that the
actual scribe was none other than Daniel Defoe, the so-called “father
of journalism” and himself a prolific writer of novels that include Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders.
What is of particular interest is that these piratical descriptions
contain the first (and only) contemporary accounts of those infamous
female pirates of the Caribbean, Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Their story
is extraordinary.
This twisting one act play investigates the creative genius of Daniel
Defoe as he struggles to balance a desire for truth against the mounting
issue of his own crippling debt. The more he molds the female characters
of his latest book the more dangerous they become as they swashbuckle
each other for historical immortality.
